Inshore Fishing Report – Savannah, Ga. for Bob McNally – 04.27.2020

Apr 27, 2020

Fishing in waters near Savannah, Ga.  is good!  Today my wife and I caught some nice flounders, redfish and whiting.  We were fishing popping floats with live mud minnows.  Slow currents due to moon stage lent to a good flounder/redfish bite.

Fishermen are catching  large whiting close to shipping to Savannah River jetties as well in sounds.  We caught a few large whiting today in a tidal creek while looking for some reds.  We’re finding flounders in inlets and rivers close to the ocean.  Reds are more widely distributed.  Some fishermen are producing some good catches of reds around back barrier island such as Skidaway Island as well up  river and around the barrier islands.   Fishermen are catching schoolies reds as well as some bigger ones.  The bigger reds are on the move from to deeper to shallower water.  May on Georgia coast is thought to be the month for cobia.  One fisherman over the weekend said he went 7 for 8 on cobia on one of the near shore wrecks.   Another fisherman last week said he saw tarpon jump .  Seems early for tarpon but good to see them.    Sea trout action has been pretty good on both  mud minnows and live shrimp.  Bait shops are catching shrimp but are having difficulty keeping bait on hand.  Bait shrimpers are beginning to see brown shrimp in their nets. Usually brown shrimp begin to appear early June.   Lots of bait can mean lots of fish.  Recent heavy rain could push shrimp out to saltier water and out the bait shrimpers grounds.   One bait shop said it wait and see – brown shrimp  could be abundant shortly or  it might take longer depending on rain.

Hope this is of interest and help!  Hope to see you on the water!

Fish On!
